Leg 6 - Solomons Island, Maryland

 4/30/24

118 Miles

A friend who grew up on the Chesapeake suggested we visit Solomons Island. We are so glad we did! Solomons Island is a quaint historic town with a rich marine history. We stayed at Safe Harbor Zahnisers, one of the nicest marinas we have stayed at on the Loop. The facility is amazing tucked in a cozy cove, the marina community was incredibly welcoming, we felt like we were at our home port. We appreciated the marina bikes making it easy to explore, its also a lovey walkable town. At the north end of the island is the Calvert  Maritime Museum and at the south end the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. In between we found a succession of marinas tucked in every corner of the waterways surrounding Solomons and a downtown of shops, restaurants, a fishing pier and boardwalk. Solomons Island by land or water is a lot of fun!

Impeccable grounds of Safe Harbor Zahnisers

La Vela, onsite Italian restaurant.
Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to eat at La Vela, it has an excellent reputation.
Next time!

Huge bath house with new large private bath/showers.

As we left Solomons Island we had a clear view of the amazing Calvert Cliffs.
Over 15 million years ago, a shallow sea covered much of Maryland. As the sea receded, it eventually left in its wake the layered sandy and clay sediments found at Calvert Cliffs a critical part of their environmental history.

Solomons Island has a lot to offer, if you can visit there is a lot to do on land or on the water.
We hope to get back some day soon.

5,646 miles to date since our departure August 1, 2023

All our best from the vessel COAST, Captain Walt and first mate Aimee.
