We wanted to visit one of the Golden Isles, a group of barrier islands off the coast of Georgia. We, really Aimee picked Jekyll Island because of its Gilded Age history. Staying at the Jekyll Island Marina was ideal and loaner bikes made exploring the island easy. The island is divided by historic district, beach town and golf courses. The historic district is beautifully preserved with a lovely visitor center and many opportunities to learn more with trolley and private tours. What started out as a plantation , later a lavish "rustic" getaway for the great industrialists and today protected with its commitment to historical and land preservation, we learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Jekyll Island.

Jekyll Island Club lawn - croquet in whites still played today.
The Jekyll Island Club was intended as a casual lifestyle getaway for the tycoons of industry including JP Morgan, Marshal Field and Joseph Pulitzer to name a few who sought to escape from the pressures of the city to hunt, fish, and enjoy the natural beauty of the coastal environment.
We took a private tour through the historic district.
Our tour guide Cathy was a retired school teacher, her attention to detail was fantastic.
Moss Cottage
As part of our private tour, we got to pick the cottage we would like to tour inside. Cathy, our tour guide encouraged Moss Cottage as it was just reopened after a lengthy restoration.
